GILGANDRA HAS SOME GREAT READERS AND CREATIVE MINDS!

Published on 05 May 2020

When COVID-19 led to the Federal Government closing libraries from midnight on Wednesday, 25 March, Gilgandra Library began offering an ordering and pick up system for loans.

The system has proved popular, with many people ordering and picking up from the front verandah of the Library.  Since Monday, 30 March, there have been over a thousand loans of books, magazines and DVDs, with numbers growing week by week.

“While usage of the Library’s online “Click and Collect” service is growing, the majority of people are phoning or emailing the Library and asking staff to select books on their behalf,” Jo Manion, Director Community Services said.

Adding,

“Library staff are fielding many calls from users for their orders, providing the opportunity to talk about their reading preferences which is a great way to discover a new author or series, as well as a chance to read something new by an author they have enjoyed before.  It’s also a great opening for people to have a general conversation and hear a friendly voice, which is so important in this current situation.”

The Library has also moved its popular LEGO and Code Clubs to online versions.  Online LEGO Club has been running for 3 weeks and now has 21 members, with weekly challenges for children to create in LEGO.

There have been some great designs, and each week, one winner is selected to receive a LEGO minifigure in the mail.  Online Code Club also commenced with a Scratch coding challenge, and challenges involving 3D printing, simple electronics and Makey Makey planned for coming weeks.
