Gilgandra Shire Council identified that Lucas Bridge over the Castlereagh River at Breelong has reached the end of its useful life. Repair was considered temporary, costly and an inefficient use of community funds. Replacement was recommended as the only alternative.

Works on the new bridge commenced in February 2021, with full closure of the bridge and approaches on Breelong-Balladoran Rd going through until the end of March 2022.

Lucas Bridge is now open to traffic following the completion of the sealing of the road pavement on the northern and southern approaches.

Council appreciates the community’s patience while this major project was underway.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government Bridges Renewal Programme and Gilgandra Shire Council.

Works in progress!
