the GIL 2020

Published on 11 February 2020

‘The GIL’ is re-opening its doors for 2020 in an exciting community venture to continue the activation of the main street.

Following on from the success of the 12 Days of Christmas which generated local spending and an increase in traffic in the main street.

Mayor Doug Batten says

“The GIL’ is about complementing our existing businesses and services, while offering locals and visitors more reasons to stop in our town and spend in our local stores. Gilgandra offers a strong mix of retail stores and services for the local community, and ‘the GIL” offers a further opportunity to diversify and strengthen these into the future.”

Adding,

“‘The GIL’ will be more than just a retail space. Council will also be working with local businesses and the community in hosting events, workshops and community activities to get you involved in this activation."

Council is focusing on key initiatives to create a dynamic opportunity in Gilgandra.

The first is the pop-up style shopping. This includes our local businesses, makers and artists who have a range of great products, services and talent to share. This is about showcasing our local wares in a centralised shopping experience.

Secondly, Council is also keen to facilitate local business start-ups, an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to test their idea in a supported space.

Council is also aiming to attract regional, established businesses looking to test the waters in Gilgandra, with a low risk venture in a centralised space.

‘The GIL’ will include support in terms of digital promotions and opportunities to attend business workshops which will be open to our wider local business community.

General Manager, David Neeves says,

“Staffed by GSC on a cost recovery basis, ‘the GIL’ will operate via commercial agreements. Hirers will also be able to access many ancillary benefits through a comprehensive support package, all intended to help activate the CBD and grow Gilgandra.”

Adding,

“We are also keen to enhance the visitor experience through this street activation, capitalising on the infrastructure Council has invested in our CBD, including the caravan parking and dump point, maximising opportunities associated with special events such as those associated with Winter Wonderland last year.

Volunteering at ‘the GIL’ is also available for any vendor or community member who wanted to be part of this opportunity, and interact socially with the community.
