New Region signs are on their way!

Published on 01 March 2021

Gilgandra Region will soon be home to new and upgraded signage over the coming weeks as final designs are fabricated and installed.

Mayor, Doug Batten says the signs will be a welcome addition that are unique to our region.

“These town entry pieces will capture the spirit of Gilgandra Shire with individual elements that reflect the local character of our township and our villages.”

Adding,

“We believe this project will have real impact in terms of residents’ pride, showcasing to visitors the aesthetics of our beautiful home, welcoming travellers to come and visit!”

The designs have been developed in consultation with the community and based off the feedback from the Have Your Say – Shire Signage survey conducted in May of 2020. There were 221 respondents and 88 comments.

Here’s what you thought:

  • Theme - a Mix of Colour & Country
  • Colour palette – Earthy Tones
  • Top Five elements –
    • Windmill
    • Coo-ee representation
    • Castlereagh river
    • Nod to Aboriginal history
    • Wheat/crops
  • Key message to include – ‘Welcome to…’
  • Key outcome – Be attractive to tourists

The Shire Signage project comprises:

  • 2 x New major town entry feature signs to be located on the Southern and Northern Entrances to the Gilgandra township on the Newell Highway
  • 2 x New minor town entry on Castlereagh and Oxley Highway entrances, smaller versions of the major town entry signs
  • 4 x Village entry signs, which will be smaller versions of the town entry feature signs at Armatree (2) and Tooraweenah (2) with design elements specific to the Villages
  • 6 x Gilgandra Shire entry signs to replace the existing timber routed signs
  • 2 x super site Gilgandra Region signs on northern and southern Newell Highway approaches on existing Ooh Media billboards
  • 8 x tourist messaging signs – to replace out of date promotional signage

Marketing & Communications Manager, Kathryn Larkin says the desired outcome is to promote Gilgandra and the local villages, Armatree and Tooraweenah.

“We are currently seeing an increase in regional travellers and by providing a welcoming, vibrant and unique entry to our region, we are attracting visitors and promoting our town in a way that is reflective of our community spirit.”

Adding,

“The designs have been developed to complement one another while touching on each of the elements in the Gilgandra Cultural Strategic plan of Military History; Farming & Natural Landscape; and Aboriginal Heritage, as well as, importantly, the feedback from our community.”

“We are excited to be presenting the designs to the community and look forward to seeing them in place, believing they will truly make a positive impression.”

It is proposed installations of the town and village entry signs will be finalised in April 2021.

Council’s contribution to this project has been developed over a number of years through savings accumulated. This has enabled Council to access additional funding towards the project. Council has a budget allocation of $250,000 for the Shire Signage project, including funding under the Stronger Country Community Fund (SCCF) Round 2 of $100,000 and $75,000 for electronic noticeboards under SCCF Round 3.
