Lucas Bridge works commencing

Published on 08 February 2021

Lucas Bridge is set to receive a major revamp with works commencing in the coming weeks.

The project involves demolition of the existing timber bridge and construction of a new concrete bridge over the Castlereagh River at Breelong, greatly improving access for the local community.

Council’s General Manager David Neeves says,

“Saunders Civibuild have been awarded the contract to undertake this major project, who will be mobilising to establish on site from next Monday, 15 February”.

Adding,

“Upgrade of the Lucas Bridge crossing has been an identified need for some time. Council recently secured significant funding through the Australian Government Bridges Renewal Program, which in addition to Council’s own budget allocation secured the project future and we look forward to works getting underway”.

There will be full closure of the bridge and approaches given the level of works involved.

  • Breelong-Balladoran Road will be closed Monday, 15 February until Wednesday, 30 June 2021, weather permitting.

Road users are asked to avoid the area, as there is no room on site for a side track.

  • Alternative access to the Castlereagh Highway is via Denmire Rd.
  • Alternative access to Gilgandra is via Hilliers Road

“There will obviously be disruption to local road users however the long term benefits far outweigh the short term inconvenience. Council has also liaised with emergency services regarding the works and anticipated project period. We appreciate the community’s patience while this major project is undertaken”, says Mr Neeves.
