Huge Response to Community Applications under Drought Communities

Published on 13 November 2018

Council invited applications from community groups and organisations for infrastructure projects, events, activities or initiatives deemed eligible under the Drought Communities Programme guidelines.

With applications closing on Friday, 9 November, Council saw projects totalling over $1.8m from 24 different community organisations.

Acting Mayor, Ash Walker says,

“This is an excellent response from our community, and it is exciting to see so many different projects and initiatives.”

Adding,

“The impact of the drought is felt even more during this traditional harvest time, and it is inspiring to see people and groups coming together to see how we can benefit our community during this time.’

Gilgandra Shire has been allocated up to $1m under the Drought Communities Programme. At its November meeting, Council will review these community applications and make decisions regarding which projects will be submitted under the Federal Government Programme.

Council has determined criteria that will be used to assist in the decision making process, with Council giving preference to those projects with a high local labour content.

Cr Walker says,

“Projects that support employment opportunities or generate income for our community is an ultimate aim of the Programme as well as a priority for Council.

Adding,

“It is our community and businesses, both agricultural and otherwise, feeling the impact of the drought, if Council can support employing and purchasing locally, this is an excellent way to boost both the economy and the community spirit in this time.”

Council’s November meeting will be held Thursday, 22 November.
