Have Your Say - Coo-ee Heritage Centre Upgrades

Published on 01 June 2020

Have Your Say on the Coo-ee Heritage Centre (CHC) upgrades as part of the Gilgandra Cultural Precinct.

Council will be hosting various information sessions on Friday 5, 12 and 19 June over videoconference, with the ability for small groups with up to 5 participants in the Council Chambers.

At these sessions the elements of the CHC upgrades will be outlined and an opportunity provided for you to ask questions and give feedback.

Mayor Doug Batten says the project is a welcomed and exciting upgrade for our community.

“The Coo-ee Heritage Centre is a beautiful building that tells a story of our history for locals and visitors alike to view. The upgrades to the Centre as well as the Windmill Walk, from the CBD to the Rural Museum will only enhance this story.”

Adding,

“We encourage residents to be involved through this process with the aim of increasing local community participation and pride in the Centre when it reopens. An exciting component of the proposed works is the construction of a decking platform, with views over the Castlereagh River and new landscaped gardens, and we hope you can envisage yourselves sitting on this decking with family and friends in the near future.”

General Manager, David Neeves says upgrades are in line with Council’s strategic planning documents to offer a well-represented and functional visitor centre and cultural experience to residents and visitors.

“There was extensive Council and community consultation through the development of Council’s Gilgandra Cultural Precinct Strategic Plan which focusses on 3 key themes namely Military heritage; Landscape, including the natural environment and farming; and our Aboriginal heritage.”

Adding,

“The upgrades are a beginning of an exciting way of promoting Gilgandra, attracting new visitor markets and communicating in today’s world of social media and information technology. The Centre will reopen with a new Gilgandra region website, marketing collateral and new interactive elements aimed to attract increased visitation.”

You can find out more about the project, view the plans and see the key outcomes and priorities of the Centre by visiting our website.”

The expected timeframe for the project is to commence construction in September 2020 and be completed by March 2021 for the Cooee Heritage Centre to reopen.

It is planned that the Visitor Information Centre will operate out of The GIL for the duration of the construction period.

Council will continue to stay in contact with stakeholders and the community as the project progresses.

Please register to participate in the scheduled Information Sessions, or contact Council to book in for a face to face group.
