About Gilgandra

Gilgandra is located on the junction of the Newell, Oxley, and Castlreagh Highways, ½ way point between Brisbane and Melbourne. Travelling inland from the east coast Gilgandra is 442 kms from Sydney and 385 kms from Newcastle. Gilgandra is also 40 minutes from the spectacular Warrumbungle Mountains.

Gilgandra is set on the banks of the Castlereagh River (an upside down river, where the water flows underground) and supports a shire population of 4309, with a town population of 3129. Gilgandra covers an area of 4487 square kilometers and the excellent climate allows outdoor activities to be enjoyed all year round.

Gilgandra has a strong rural centre, with the main industry being crops for farming and sheep grazing since 1830, with a significant increase in cattle over the last century.
